**INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY**The Department of History is seeking to appoint a number of Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA's) for the academic year 2019-20 and are inviting applications for GTA work to assist with teaching on various modules which may include:HR100-4-FY Making of the Modern World since 1750HR101-4-AU Becoming a HistorianHR102-4-SP Multicultural Britain: a HistoryHR103-4-AU Hidden Histories: class, gender and the rise of British democracy HR104-4-SP Resisting EmpireHR106-4-AU People and Power: A History of Democracy in Modern EuropeHR111-4-FY Europe Transformed: 1450-1750HR162-4-SP The Great American ExperimentHR394-6-AU The United States and the Vietnam WarHR510 History Works: Career PortfolioPurpose of the role and responsibilities: The Graduate Teaching Assistant post will contribute to the Department's teaching programme by providing teaching and tuition to help students meet their learning outcomes.GTA's assist academic staff in the Department by performing teaching or teaching related duties normally using existing teaching materials.GTA's will receive close supervision and direction including regular feedback, pastoral support and guidance. The Module Supervisor will give full background on the module and clear direction on the content to be taught and the preparation necessary, and will undertake assessment of teaching. If marking is to be undertaken, it should be in line with the University's marking policy and under the guidance of the Module Supervisor.The key responsibilities are:* Preparing and teaching seminars to undergraduate students, providing them with a thorough knowledge of the subject and enabling them to meet the learning outcomes* Attending the lectures relating to the module(s) taught * Attending a seminar taken by the Module Director* Holding office hours related to the module(s) taught and undertaking student liaison (e.g. responding to emails)* Marking coursework assignments and providing feedback to student to support their learning* Maintaining contact with the module supervisor * Undertaking related administrative duties, including monitoring attendance* Attending training courses and workshops * Attending briefing meetings as part of the induction process* Any other duties as may from time to time be assigned by the Head of Department or their nominee.Background knowledge and skills required:The following knowledge and skills are required for this role:* A first degree or a Master's degree, or other appropriate qualification in History * At least one year of doctoral research experience (or similar) * Good knowledge of the requirements of the subject area of the module taught* A willingness to undertake a programme of training relevant to the requirements of this post * Ability to communicate academic and teaching material clearly and effectively to both academic staff and a wide range of students* Effective organisation skills to manage time and prioritise different duties* Able to present work in a well-structured and coherent manner* Ability to work independently and as part of a teamRange of hours offered:The total number of hours per week will be between 6 and 7 hours.General information:You can find more information about the department at the following link: http://www.essex.ac.uk/history/
Training and support:University Induction and compulsory training, including Equality and Diversity, Department Induction, Staff Handbook, Cadenza, Bi-annual GTA feedback and networking sessions, meetings with Module Directors as required, observation of one seminar by Module Director, teaching observation by Module Director, marking guidance and moderation.
