Department of Mathematical Sciences
The Department is a growing and vibrant department in the Faculty of Science and Health. The Department is internationally known for its research in a range of areas and offers an excellent education to its students.
Our ambitious Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Centre has transformed Square 1 into a dedicated science square with new collaborative learning spaces and interdisciplinary teaching facilities.
The £13.2m teaching centre includes a 200-seat IT-rich exploratory learning space to help students from across the Faculty of Science and Health work collaboratively. The building will also include social space and a café, for students, business meetings and for outreach with schools.
The Department is now looking to appoint a Technician to support hardware and software specific to departments in DMS, CSEE and Psychology, and provide a technical link with ITS, who are responsible for STEM AV and IT equipment.
Duties of the Role
The successful candidate will be part of the team responsible for managing the day-to-day running of the STEM computer laboratories and the management and supervision of technical staff as required by Systems Manager.
You will be required to maintain the STEM hardware infrastructure and develop software needed to support the leading-edge education provided by the Faculty. Providing advanced technical support to academic staff and students, you will be required to work closely with DMS staff and students and IT Service to ensure lab facilities are run efficiently and smoothly, and problems are resolved in a prompt and timely manner.
Furthermore, the post holder will be required to provide IT support to the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

Skills and qualifications required
The successful candidate will have working knowledge of at least one programming discipline (MATLAB, R or Python) and in-depth knowledge of any other programming discipline and be familiar with both Windows and Linux operating systems. The candidate must be able to diagnose PC hardware faults and liaise with suppliers to ensure faults are resolved promptly.
Experience should span hardware and software installation and configuration. The candidate will work as part of a vibrant academic department and must therefore possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a larger team.
First degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent experience is essential for this post.
