School of Sport, Rehabilitation & Exercise Sciences (SRES)
The University of Essex is expanding its facilities for sports performance, research and education with a major new facility opening in January 2018. As part of this development, the School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences is investing significantly in new research and teaching provision.
We are therefore seeking to appoint a Professor in Health and Physical Activity with outstanding leadership skills to play a key role in developing our international research and education profile. This follows a successful inaugural submission to the HFCE Research Excellence Framework 2014, where Essex was ranked in the top 20% nationally for research intensity.
The Role and Duties
The successful candidate will be expected to make a major contribution to the research environment in our HEAL (Health Exercise and Active Lifestyle) research group. This group has international expertise in green exercise, pacing, biomedical optics, paediatric exercise science, cardiovascular health and rehabilitation.
Opportunities also exist to build on our existing collaborations with the wider University community. These include: the School of Biological Sciences; Institute for Social and Economic Research; the Centre for Brain Science; School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, School of Health and Social Care; and the Institute for Analytics and Data Science.
The main duties of the post will include providing strategic leadership in education; building up a sustained and effective record of impact at a strategic level in relation to teaching and learning; generation of internationally excellent research, scholarship and teaching; providing research leadership in securing external funding; supervising postgraduate research students and/ or research staff; providing research leadership in securing external funding and publishing research outcomes of an internationally excellent standard.
Qualifications and Skills Required
Applicants must hold a relevant doctoral-level research degree or equivalent professional experience or practice, be able to demonstrate significant leadership and have a proven track record of internationally excellent research in Health and Physical Activity along with the ability to attract significant research funding. Candidates should also have an enthusiasm for and be prepared to contribute to our UG and PG degree programmes.
