Essex Business School
The Essex Accounting Group is home to an international community of academics and students. The Group has established strengths in conducting world-class research in accounting from an interdisciplinary perspective, and intends to focus on a number of research streams for the coming years, which are drawn from current and emerging social, environmental, political, economic and health challenges. The Group is also the leading research group nationally and internationally on research into accounting in emerging economies. In line with this, the Group hosts the British Accounting and Finance Association’s (BAFA) special interest group on Accounting and Finance in Emerging Economies, its associated journal, the Journal of Accounting in Emerging Economies, and a very successful biennial international conference on Accounting and Accountability in Emerging Economies (AAEE). Over the last few years, the Group has also built a very strong cluster which relies on quantitative methods and market-based perspectives in the context of both developed and developing countries, while also strengthening its public sector accounting research profile, being increasingly at the centre of the key international public sector accounting research networks, hosting the chair of the Public Service Accounting and Accountability Group, and the joint-editorship of Financial Accountability & Management.
Essex Business School now seeks to strengthen the Accounting Group by appointing an outstanding candidate at the Professorial level. We would especially welcome applications from candidates with expertise in market-based accounting research. Candidates with expertise in other areas of accounting are also encouraged to apply.
Duties of the Role
This appointment will have a vital role in enhancing the School’s research leadership profile, developing undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision, and extending the Accounting Group’s profile regionally, nationally and internationally. Reporting to the Dean of the Business School, the post-holders will engage in and publish world leading research and generate significant research income; successfully supervise PhD students; offer leadership in research; undertake teaching responsibilities relevant to programmes of the School; and contribute more widely to the School through service, administration and, where appropriate, informal leadership.
A full list of duties and responsibilities can be found within the job pack.

Candidates should have a PhD in Accounting or specialism related to the area of the post, extensive experience of teaching and research in accounting, together with an extensive publication record in peer-reviewed internationally-rated journals in accounting related areas. You should also have excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills. In addition, candidates should have substantive experience in leadership and management in an academic environment coupled with the ability to motivate, and co-ordinate with, other staff.
We particularly welcome applications from those who identify as female or non-binary and those from an ethnic minority group, as they are under-represented at this level.
This is a permanent, full-time post on an ASER (teaching and research) contract and appointment will be made as Professor (R). The post is available from 1 January 2022.
