Essex Law School Ranked 51st in the law subject section in the 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, at Essex Law School we take excellence in research and excellence in education equally seriously. We have a global reputation for our research: more than two-thirds of our publications were rated as 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent' in REF 2014, placing us in the top 20 UK law schools. In addition to our three-year LLB degree, we run a long-established 'double degree' in English and French law, and several joint honours courses in law with human rights, politics, philosophy, business, finance and criminology. At taught postgraduate level, we have particular expertise in commercial law, trade and maritime law, and human rights. This post is open to any area of law, although we are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute teaching and research expertise in areas of law such as torts, criminal law, environmental law, employment law, land law, equity, public law and legal theory. We welcome a range of scholarly perspectives, including doctrinal, socio-legal and theoretical outlooks.The School is looking to make an academic appointment at Senior Lecturer, Reader or Professor Level.Duties of the RoleWe encourage collaborative and multi-disciplinary research projects. Candidates will be expected to produce and publish high-quality research; contribute to our research community and provide teaching and motivation to students at undergraduate and postgraduate level.Applicants at the Senior Lecturer or Reader level will engage in curriculum development, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and research supervision at both an individual and a strategic level; and provide research leadership and engage in activities that will enhance the research profile of the Department.You will also engage in individual and/or collaborative research activity that is in keeping with REF criteria; and generate research income appropriate in scale to career stage and subject area norms.In addition applicants at the Professor level will have a sustained and effective record of impact at a strategic level in relation to teaching and learning, as part of a wider commitment to academic practice; and pursue research that is world leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour, in keeping with the REF criteria. In addition, you will generate substantial research income commensurate with subject area norms. At all levels you will also contribute to the administration and management of the Department, and to the local, regional and international profile of the Department.A full list of key responsibilities and main duties (Education, Research and Leadership and Citizenship) can be found within the respective job packs below.Skills and qualifications requiredApplicants will hold a relevant doctoral level research degree, or equivalent professional experience or practice and will hold an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in law or equivalent professional experience.You will have significant teaching experience at either undergraduate or postgraduate level, preferably in a UK legal system. You will be required to provide evidence of an established and internationally recognised research profile, with a well-developed future research agenda; a sustained record of effectiveness in education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; a record of success in generating external research income (established for Reader level); and a strong track record of published academic output at international levels of recognition with evidence of a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes.Applicants at the Professor level will be required to demonstrate evidence of teaching excellence at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels appropriate to the discipline; a strong, sustained record of academic publication at international or world-leading levels of recognition, with evidence of a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes; and an established record of success in securing and managing substantial research grants (appropriate to the discipline).In addition at Reader and Professor level, applicants will have a distinguished academic record, including internationally excellent research.These are permanent, full-time posts on an ASER (teaching and research) contract.
