The School of Life Sciences
There has never been a more exciting time to study the science of biology, whether your interest is in human, animal or plant life. As one of the University’s largest departments, we are renowned for our high levels of student satisfaction on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
The School is now seeking to recruit a lecturer to join any one of our four research groups. Our philosophy is to deliver research across all levels of biological organisation, from genes and cells through to communities and ecosystems, which is undertaken within our Ecology and Environmental Microbiology, Genomics and Computational Biology, Plant Productivity, and Protein Structure and Mechanisms of Disease research groups. We welcome applicants from within any of these sub disciplines, but we are particularly interested in researchers with a strong ecology or marine biology focus (e.g. coral reef biology, fisheries science, food webs, conservation biology, molecular ecology, global change research).
Based on a successful track record to date and research plan, the successful applicant will have made a convincing case of adding value to, and being a strategic fit into, one of our groups. All our groups are highly active in their research and well placed to deliver an excellent performance in REF2021. The research in the School benefits from a collegial research environment, excellent lab and computational facilities and notable year-on-year increasing success in securing research funding.
Applicants will also be required to demonstrate alignment to UKRI strategic priority areas and be able to propose an area of their research or experience that could develop into a long-term REF Impact Case Study. Our guiding principle is “excellence in research, excellence in teaching”. Therefore, we expect the successful appointee to assist in delivering relevant and inspiring teaching to one or more of our degree courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Candidates will be required to conduct internationally excellent research demonstrated through publications in high quality peer-reviewed journals.
You will also engage effectively in substantive teaching and learning support roles in the School.
A full list of duties can be found within the jobpack attached.
The be successful you will have a relevant doctoral level research degree and have Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher-level if appropriate.
Experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to engage in teaching and learning support in Higher Education in imaginative, engaging and innovative ways, experience of designing and planning learning activities developing effective learning environments and approaches to student/client support and guidance and strong communication skills, both written and verbal are all essential for this post.
In addition, it is essential that you have a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes and evidence of a research agenda, engagement in high-quality research activity and a developing research profile.
