Optoelectronics Materials and Devices Research
The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering has established a new optoelectronics materials and devices laboratory, supported by a new microfabrication cleanroom which is under construction. These laboratories will support research work of the Head of School, Professor Anthony Vickers, as well as other research staff within the Communication research group. There will be initial work to establish both laboratories and re-establish the operation of a range of experimental set ups (PL, EL, EPL, spectral photocurrent, THz emission, THz spectroscopy, temporal photoconductivity, etc.)
Duties of the Role
Working with the Head of School, Professor Anthony Vickers to undertake research in the area of semiconductor materials and devices, the Research Engineer will establish experiments agreed with Professor Vickers.
The research will focus on temperature dependent photoluminescence, electroluminescence, spectral photocurrent, THz emission, THz spectroscopy however the Research Engineer will have scope to develop their own research directions as well. The role will also involve liaising with the assigned technical staff member, Adrian Boland-Thoms, to oversee the work in the laboratories and cleanroom undertaken by students. Furthermore the role will involve managing resources and risk assessments.
The primary duties of the post will include installing, updating and maintaining the new optoelectronics and microfabrication laboratories; initiating and undertaking research work as directed by the Head of School and supporting students using the facilities for PhD, MSc and BSc projects.Appointment to this role will be made as a Senior Research Officer.Skills and Qualifications required
Applicants should have a PhD in Physics/Electronic Engineering or related discipline; or the expectation of a PhD qualification prior to the start of the appointment. A minimum 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in Physics/Electronic Engineering or related discipline is also essential.
Applicants must demonstrate the ability to conduct and develop independent research leading to published results in the form of peer-reviewed research articles and other forms of research outputs, and to contribute to the research activities of the School.
Candidates should also evidence strong research activity, and the potential for research excellence. Experience of temperature dependent photoluminescence and the design, fabrication, and testing of semiconductor photodetectors is essential.
Candidates will also be expected to demonstrate experience of transient and spectral photocurrent measurements, cleanroom processes (photolithography, wet etching, metallisation, wire bonding) and device simulation.
This is a fixed-term, full-time role for three years based at our Colchester Campus.
