Department
We have an academic post available at Lecturer level to an applicant with teaching and research expertise in media law.
At Essex Law School, we take excellence in research and excellence in education equally seriously. New academic staff are supported to become fellows of the Higher Education Authority and we are a top 20 UK law school for research (REF2014). We champion research-led education, where teaching is informed by research and students develop research skills (culminating for undergraduates in a final year capstone project). You'll be joining a growing law school: when you start in September 2017, you'll be one of 66 permanent academic members of the School.
Role
This post combines the main duties of teaching, research and academic administration.
Journalism is a relatively new area of teaching and research at Essex, launched at a time when the media is undergoing profound changes; you'll have an opportunity to shape the agenda through your teaching and research on media law. A significant part of your teaching will be on core modules for students taking degrees in journalism in the Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies but you may also contribute to other areas of law on the Law School's LLB and LLM courses.
You will produce high quality and impactful research outputs. We encourage collaborative and multi-disciplinary projects. You will have clear plans to produce high quality scholarly work suitable for REF2021.
Alongside teaching and research, you'll have an administrative role in helping to run the Law School as a member of a team managing our education, research, recruitment or employability work.
Qualifications and skills required
You will have, or be near to completion of a PhD, or be able to demonstrate an equivalent level of knowledge and research expertise supported by evidence. Proven experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to engage in teaching and learning support in Higher Education in imaginative, engaging and innovative ways is essential.
At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
