The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE)The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE) is a large and dynamic department in the Faculty of Science and Health. The School is internationally known for its research in a range of areas and offers an excellent education to its students. The School are now seeking to appoint a Research Officer or a Senior Research Officer on a one year fixed-term, part time basis, to work on the project 'Neuro-curation'.This is the first step of a project that focuses on studying the potential role that sound can play in virtual museum exhibits. The project will focus on the 'sonic enhancement' of virtual museum exhibits. Specifically, the work will focus on running a series of experiments to explore how neural engineering technology may be used to aid sound design in virtual museum exhibitions. This will include work on extraction of information from EEG and other physiological signals, on behavioural and neuro-physiological investigations of multisensory feature binding and integration, experiment design, and sound design, as well as working with the project team to explore how neural engineering technology can be used to provides accurate, real-time, objective measures of audience reactions.Duties of the RoleThe successful applicant will work, on a day-to-day basis, in the Brain-computer interfaces and neural engineering laboratory. The lab was founded in 2004, and is today one of the largest and best equipped in Europe and the top laboratory for non-invasive BCIs and human cognitive augmentation in the UK. For well over a decade, the lab has produced highly visible internationally leading research, peer reviewed publications and frequent media presence, with international (MIT, NASA JPL, ESA, Harvard, UCB) and national (Oxford, Imperial, UCL) collaborations. Indeed, it has been singled out as a world class element of CSEE in the last Research Evaluation Framework. To this end, you will have a key role in conducting a series of experiments that allow us to pinpoint how different sounds may be used to create more engaging experiences for spectators when viewing artworks in a virtual context.A full list of duties can be found within the respective jobpacks.Skills and Qualifications requiredAt Research Officer level applicants are expected to hold a Bachelor's degree in the fields of Computer Science, Biomedical engineering, Psychology, or equivalent and or/ professional experience or practise. You will be expected to have evidence of an emerging research agenda profile and evidence of publications in recognised, reputable journals. At Senior Research Officer level applicants are expected to hold a PhD (or be very close to submitting their PhD thesis) in Biomedical Engineering, Brain-computer Interfaces, Neural Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Statistics, Physics, Computer Science, Neuroscience or a closely related discipline. You will be expected to have evidence of a developing research agenda and a developing record of publications in internationally recognised, reputable journals. At both levels the successful candidate will have strong programming skills, and experience of contributing to small research programmes or defined areas of larger projects, and of developing research objectives and proposals, along with strong communication skills, both written and verbal.Applicants are also expected to have a strong publication record (relative to their career stage) as first author, ideally including publications in 1st quartile journals in relevant areas. Please note on your application form what level you are applying for; Research Officer or Senior Research Officer. At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do.
