The Essex Artificial Intelligence Innovation Centre brings together the research skills, expertise and technologies across our Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Science and Health, and Faculty of Humanities, Science and Health, and Social Sciences to address the grand challenges facing citizens, workers, and all those technologists in sectors undergoing the digital transformation to create new - or modify existing - business processes, culture, and customer experiences to meet changing business and market requirements.

Recently, we secured funding from Innovate UK for the H2020 project titled: Grinner: ImprovinG waste management through an AI-powered detection system of batteries utilising data from XRay detectors and pick-and-place robots. As part of this project, we are looking to recruit a Senior Research Officer to work along with our Principal Investigator and the Senior Project Manager to design Edge AI hardware and Machine Learning (ML) and Automation for Image Recognition.
Duties of the Role
The purpose of this post is to deliver the research objectives defined by the SEP-210804375 grant and research project Grinner (ImprovinG waste management through an AI-powered detection system of batteries utilising data from XRay detectors and pick-and-place robots).

Qualifications and Skills required
The successful candidate will hold a doctoral level degree in signal processing (or be close to completion of PhD studies) or equivalent professional experience or practice.
You must have evidence of a developing research agenda with a developing record of publications in internationally recognised, reputable journals appropriate to career stage and discipline norms, or evidence of research outputs such as reports and briefings. In addition, you will have experience in signal processing, and particularly with multi-channel data acquisition and large and complex datasets, and with X-Ray image acquisition and post processing.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, is essential in order to be able to disseminate the result of research to a wide audience.
This appointment will be on a fixed-term, full-time basis until 31 August 2025 in line with the temporary funding.
