Department/RoleThe School of Biological Sciences is seeking to appoint two lecturers in the area of Biomedical Science. These positions are part of an initiative funded by the University to increase research intensity in Biological Sciences and to maintain the high quality of our undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Candidates should have an enthusiasm for teaching, a track record of high quality research outputs and be able to demonstrate they have the ability to obtain grant support. We are particularly keen to attract candidates with a strong track record that complements existing research strengths in Cancer and Stem Cell Biology in the areas of viral gene therapy and immunology (especially inflammation, immunogenetics or cancer immunotherapy). The School of Biological Sciences provides a vibrant, multi-disciplinary research environment. Appointees will have access to a range of state-of-the-art core facilities supporting research in the areas of microbiology, bio-imaging, cytometry, proteomics, structural biology and biophysics, as well as newly equipped molecular genetics and computational biology laboratories.
The successful applicants will be expected to contribute to teaching, to conduct independent research and obtain research funding. Our School supports research groups, with technical expertise, infrastructure, intellectual engagement and collaboration in the areas of Cancer and Stem Cell Biology, Protein Structure and Function, and Genomics and Computational Biology. Our multidisciplinary research environment is central to our curriculum development and commitment to excellence in research-led teaching, ensuring a relevant and highly rated learning experience for our undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Duties of the Post
The post holders will be required to conduct internationally excellent research and demonstrate this through publications in high quality peer-reviewed journals and other outlets. To sustain their research the post holders will be expected to develop and execute a strategy for raising research income commensurate with their sub-discipline norms. This should be in the context of developing a network of national and international collaborations. As part of the School's research-led teaching ethos, the post holders will be expected to develop innovative learning materials, teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level and supervise PhD students in the area of biomedical science. The School places a high value on collegiality and the post holders will be expected to contribute to the smooth running of our education and research activities by taking on administrative duties as required.
Qualifications/Skills Required
The successful applicants will have a PhD in a relevant discipline and an excellent track record of research demonstrated by a publication and funding record commensurate with the stage of career. Applicants will be required to demonstrate how their experience complements and extends the relevant research in the School and will also be expected to provide evidence of belonging to a network of researchers at national or international levels. Excellent communication skills and an ability to explain their research to audiences ranging from peers to the general public are required together with the necessary interpersonal skills that will allow effective interaction with colleagues, our students and the general public.
