Language Teacher, Department of Language and Linguistics
Job description
Department of Language and Linguistics / Languages for All
The Department of Language and Linguistics (DLL) has 37 full-time academic members of staff and provides a broad spectrum of expertise in the study of language and in the practical teaching of modern foreign languages. Its core ambition is to offer students a transformative educational experience
in these areas underpinned by high quality research. The majority of research conducted in the department is rated 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent', placing us 8th among departments in the UK for research quality (REF 2014).
Languages for All offers a portfolio of language courses to non-specialist language learners at the University of Essex. Courses are currently delivered by a mixture of permanent core teaching staff and part-time teachers, and are delivered as evening classes. Due to sustained and planned future growth in our levels of activity we wish to expand our pool of part-time teachers. These opportunities may also be suitable for PhD Students looking to gain valuable experience in teaching.
Duties of the Post
The purpose of these posts is to teach evening language classes within the Languages for All programme at beginner and/or post-beginner levels as needed and to contribute to the successful administration and delivery of the Languages for All programme.
You will be required to carry out all associated assessment duties for the classes taught; assist the Languages for All team in the reviewing the Languages for All courses by providing relevant feedback; and attend relevant meetings and/or workshops as needed.
Qualifications and Skills required
Those interested should have a degree or equivalent graduate qualification in a subject relevant to the teaching of the language, and prior experience of teaching in the target language in a professional setting in the UK. A prior teaching qualification is also desirable. Native speakers of the target language are desirable, but not essential.
In addition, you will possess the ability to teach relevant language at beginners and post-beginners levels, providing appropriate cultural background; and the ability to motivate and encourage students in the completion of non-credited language courses.
We are seeking expressions of interest from individuals with expertise in delivery of language teaching in the following languages: British Sign Language, Arabic, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese.
Teaching takes place at our Colchester campus. Teaching opportunities vary by language, with courses currently being scheduled to start in October 2019.
This advertisement does not constitute the potential offer of a contract of employment with the University of Essex, but is seeking expressions of interest in joining a pool of temporary teachers.
No guarantee can be made at this stage in terms of volume of teaching, although typically this may be between 2-6 hours per week for typically 20-24 weeks per annum throughout the year. Part-time teachers are paid monthly on a pro-rata basis at agreed hourly rates.
How to Apply
If you are interested in joining our team, please submit an expression of interest via email, including an up-to-date CV, to Dr Ángel Osle, Languages for All Coordinator, at a.osle@essex.ac.uk.
At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
