Lecturer in Psychoanalytic and Psychosocial Studies, Department of PPS
Job description
Department
The Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies is recognised internationally as one of the leading Departments for work that focuses on the role of the unconscious mind in mental health, culture and society and the many psychosocial factors, which influence our lives.
We are now seeking to appoint a full-time Lecturer in Psychoanalytic
and Psychosocial Studies. This is a fixed-term, full-time role for 36 hours a week starting from 1 October 2019. You will take up a teaching role supporting the delivery of our innovative Undergraduate and Postgraduate provision.
Duties of the Role
The purpose of the role is to contribute to teaching in the area of Psychoanalytic and Psychosocial Studies on a range of UG and PGT programmes which include psychoanalytic theory, concepts and practice.
Duties will include teaching a range of theory and practice orientated undergraduate and postgraduate modules; teaching experiential modules e.g. Psychoanalytic Observation and Reflective Practice; supporting students as a personal tutor in a pastoral or advisory role; and supervising UG dissertations.
Key responsibilities at this level involve contributing to excellence in education by designing and delivering substantive and effective teaching and learning support, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; undertaking leadership duties related to education appropriate to career stage as may be reasonably required by the HoD; and enhancing the scholarly reputation of the Department and the University by contact with the wider academic community and participation in knowledge exchange activity.
The post-holder will undertake a full range of Education, Leadership and Citizenship, and Scholarship and Professional Practice duties as detailed in the Lecturer (ASE) job pack.
Qualifications and Skills required
The successful candidate will hold a relevant Masters level degree in Psychoanalysis, Psychotherapy, Counselling, or equivalent professional experience or practice. In addition, the post-holder will need to be a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher level if appropriate. Ideally, you will also be a member of the British Psychoanalytic Council, the Council for Psychoanalysis and Jungian Analysis (a college of the UK Council for Psychotherapy), the Association of Child Psychotherapists the British Association of Psychotherapy and Counselling or an equivalent organisation.
You will have experience of working independently in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to achieve this and a commitment to the on-going evaluation of your own teaching and ability to do this effectively, with the support of others where appropriate. In addition, you will possess the knowledge and capacity to teach Psychoanalytic Observation and Reflective Practice.
A successful candidate will have the ability and willingness to play an active part in the administration of the department, and the willingness to become involved and take an equal share in extra-curricular activities within the department (e.g. open days; research student conferences; school visits etc.).
This is a fixed-term, full-time role on an ASE (teaching only) contract. As an enabling academic environment for all of our students and staff we are committed to the principles of Athena Swan and equality for all. We particularly welcome applications from those who identify as female or non-binary and those from an ethnic minority to improve their representation in the Department.
At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
