The Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER)ISER houses the ESRC-funded Research Centre on Micro-Social Change (MiSoC). MiSoC is a multi-disciplinary research centre, with existing researchers having backgrounds in Economics, Sociology, Social Policy, Demography, Political Science, Social Statistics and Epidemiology. The Department of Economics at the University of Essex is next door. Both places have a lively group of economists and numerous seminars, workshops and visitors, making this a very strong research environment.
The Role and DutiesThe Institute for Social and Economic Research wishes to appoint a quantitative economist to the post of Senior Research Officer to work with Professor Sonia Bhalotra on research related to health and human rights as part of an ESRC-funded large grant - The Human Rights, Big Data and Technology (HRBDT) Project. HRBDT is based at the Human Rights Centre at the University of Essex. The research will involve gathering, assimilating and analysing large administrative and/or survey data. The purpose of the research will be to understand how big data can illuminate implementation of the right to health.
This appointment is full-time, fixed-term for 2 years. The appointed candidate will also spend time in the Human Rights Centre, which has a similarly strong research environment.
This is a research position and there are no teaching duties associated with this post. Ideally, the successful candidate will be able to start on 1 October 2017.
Qualifications and skills requiredThe successful candidate should hold a PhD in Economics (or have equivalent level experience) as well as an MSc in Economics. They should have knowledge of advanced quantitative methods for the analysis of survey data or other micro-data, and experience of advanced data management, statistical analysis and programming in Stata, R or similar software packages.
