UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships at Essex
The University of Essex invites applications from interested applicants for Round 8 of the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship (UKRI FLF). Essex will support a number of UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships applications from applicants whose research interests align with those of the University. Applications for these fellowships require a commitment from the host institution, and Essex will hold an internal competition to decide which applications it will support in each round.
The University of Essex is a research-intensive university with one of the most internationally diverse campuses in the UK. The 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) found that 83% of our research output is world-leading or internationally excellent and three subjects were in the top 10 in the UK for research output. We are ranked in the top 10 in five subject areas for research power, with a further five subject areas in the top 30. We share an equal commitment to excellence in education and excellence in research and we are on a quest to appoint people who will help us achieve our goals.
The UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships scheme is aiming to support early career researchers and innovators with outstanding potential who are transitioning to establishing independence. Applicants are expected to hold a doctorate or have equivalent research experience or training. UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships are tenable on a 4+3 year basis and are subject to specific eligibility criteria. Please ensure that you meet all of the UKRI FLF criteria (pp. 8-9) before seeking support from the University.
The University of Essex will consider supporting applications in any area of our research portfolio but we particularly invite expressions of interest from researchers working in one or more of the following key areas of research interest:
HOW TO APPLY
Candidates should e-mail the following documents to ukriflf@essex.ac.uk by 5:00 p.m. on Monday 17 April 2023:
Please use the covering letter to explain why you should be considered as an early career researcher and to make us aware of any career breaks. Please also let us know whether you wish to apply for an FLF on a part-time or job-share basis (but note that a Fellowship cannot be combined with another role). See Annex C and D of the Scheme Guidance Notes for further details.
THE SELECTION PROCESSSelection will be made on the basis of application materials. All complete applications will be considered by a panel of senior academic staff that will select which candidates will be put forward to UKRI. In assessing applications, the panel will be guided by the quality of the proposed research project, its relevance to Essex’s research portfolio, and the potential of the candidate to become a future research and innovation leader.
Candidates will be informed whether their applications will be supported by the University no later than 4 May. For those candidates successful in obtaining support from the University, we will provide extensive assistance in refining their full applications to UKRI. The completed full application must be submitted to UKRI by 4 July.
