The School of Health and Social Care
Our academic members of staff include health policy, services and systems researchers, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, psychological therapists, nurses, social workers, oral health practitioners, psychologists, and sociologists. The School is run over two campuses: Southend and Colchester. Academic staff are supported by a team of administrative staff based at both Colchester and Southend campuses.
The School has an excellent reputation for innovative educational delivery of a range of professional programmes in combination with an excellent research track record in social scientific approaches to the study of health, illness, and wellbeing. The school offers a unique context for the development and application of novel approaches to the study of a range of health and social care contexts, all underpinned by a concern for understanding the wider social contexts in which health, illness and wellbeing are located. We have excellent partnerships with NHS, private and third sector organisations which facilitate and underpin our excellence in applied research and impact. We aim for excellence in research and in education and are looking for candidates who can contribute to both.
The School is currently going through exciting changes and expansion, with an increase in student numbers, an intention to prepare for submission to Unit Assessment 3 (research focusing on Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy) for the next Research Excellence Framework (REF), and the introduction of new courses, including the new Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner Apprenticeship, and Masters in Global Public Health. We are also expanding and building new and innovative areas for student study, including new clinical skills spaces, consultation rooms and study areas.
As part of this exciting expansion, we are now looking to appoint a lecturer and senior lecturer within the School of Health and Social Care across all areas of Health and Social Care and Health Services Research. The post holder may be a registrant of any Health and Social Care profession, or a non-registrant with related qualifications in Health and Social Care. We especially encourage candidates with a background / experience and interest in Health Services Research, Clinical Rehabilitation, Implementation Science, Quality Improvement, Clinical Neuropsychology, and Mental Health.
Duties of the RoleThe purpose of these posts will be to play an active part in the delivery and development of the Health and Social Care programmes in the School, and contribute to the School’s exciting growth and development in scholarship and research. For the grade 8 post, duties will include engaging effectively in substantive teaching and learning support roles in the School, and developing a broad understanding of how such activities support student learning and design, plan and deliver learning in creative and innovative ways appropriate to the subject area and level.
At grade 9, you will develop a research agenda, which pursues individual and/or collaborative research objectives and produce research outputs for publication.
In addition, at grade 10, you will provide research leadership and engage in activities that will enhance the research profile of the School and will pursue research that is excellent and original significant and rigorous, in keeping with the REF criteria.

Skills and qualifications requiredThe successful candidates will hold a relevant doctoral level degree within Health and Social Care or Health Services Research or equivalent professional experience or practice (or be close to completion for Grade 8 and 9) and will have fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher-level if appropriate.
It is essential that candidates have the ability to keep up to date with the relevant current practice, teaching and legislation.
At grade 9, candidates would be expected to have substantial experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to engage in teaching and learning support in, engaging and innovative ways and have a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes and evidence of a research agenda, engagement in high-quality research activity and a developing research profile.
At grade 10, you will be required to provide evidence of an established and internationally recognised research profile and have strong track record of published academic output at international levels of recognition with evidence of a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes.
At all grades, experience and interest in one or more subject areas and disciplines relevant to Health and Social Care and/or Health Services Research including Clinical Rehabilitation, Quality Improvement, Implementation Science, Mental Health, Clinical Neuropsychology is essential.
