Curator (ESCALA and University Art Collections), Library Services
Job description
Library Services
This is an exciting opportunity to manage a major art collection and contribute to the development of academic and research support services at the University of Essex. Library Services - in which the post is based - includes three campus libraries, the largest being the iconic Albert Sloman Library at the Colchester campus, with over 1m printed
items, extensive special collections and examples of work by leading 20th century artists such as Christopher Wood, Ben Nicholson, Alfred Wallis and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska. In addition to promoting and conserving these artworks, the post holder will be responsible for the management and development of ESCALA, the University's unique collection of Latin American art, with over 750 works dating largely from the 1960s to the present.
Duties of the Role
Based at ESCALA's purpose-designed Teaching and Research space on the University's Colchester campus, and working in the Albert Sloman Library as required, the post holder will be responsible for the overall management, care and strategic development of ESCALA and the University's other art collections; contributing to exhibitions, and developing and delivering innovative research-led teaching and Object Based Learning based on the collections and associated material.
In addition, the post holder will be responsible for selectively acquiring new artworks for the collections and proactively participating in and developing internal and external professional networks and establishing links in order to enhance the reputation of the University.
Qualifications and Skills required
Educated to first degree level, with a postgraduate qualification (or equivalent) in art history, gallery studies or a related subject, and a particular knowledge of the art of Latin America, the post holder will possess excellent communication, IT, organisational and planning skills, and demonstrate a willingness to engage with external professional bodies, organisations and networks at home and abroad.
This post may require working evenings and weekends occasionally and travelling to other campuses as necessary.
At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
