The School of Biological Sciences is large and diverse and provides a vibrant research and teaching environment with a strong collegiate culture. We have a global reputation for our research: two-thirds of our research was rated as 'world leading' or 'international excellent' in REF 2014. 

The School of Biological Sciences delivers undergraduate degree courses in Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Genetics and Marine Biology, with around 900 students supported by over 100 academic, research and administrative staff. Our GBP 13.2 million STEM Teaching Centre, opened in September 2018, provides cutting edge laboratory teaching facilities. The School aims to provide students with a challenging and inspiring educational experience through research-led teaching. Our BSc Marine Biology degree is our second largest degree course, after our flagship BSc Biomedical Science degree. The key features of this degree are a strong emphasis on field work and skill development. In addition, our MSc in Tropical Marine Biology is our largest PGT degree routinely taking 25-30 students per annum, because it is a unique offering in the UK. Our main field site for teaching our students on this course is the Hoga reef in Wakatobi National Park, Indonesia. The School's Coral Reef Research Unit was a ke player in helping to establish this coral reef system as a UN World Heritage Site. Many of our students go on to conduct their research projects in various reef locations across the tropics working with our network of contacts, conservation agencies and overseas researchers. The postholder will be a member of the Ecology and Environmental Microbiology Research Group and develop their research programme in this context and emphasises our commitment to research-led teaching as the ideal we strive to achieve.    

The University of Essex School of Biological Sciences is recruiting a lecturer to its dynamic Marine Biology group.  The group benefits from excellent lab and computational facilities and has had remarkable success in securing funding. Applicants are welcome from all disciplines relevant to tropical marine biology but we are particularly interested in applicants that build on our strengths in biodiversity, climate and environmental change, biogeochemical cycling and environmental biotechnology.

The postholder will be required to conduct internationally excellent research and demonstrate this through publications in high quality peer-reviewed journals and other outlets. The post-holder will be expected to develop and execute a strategy for raising research income to sustain an active, internationally competitive research programme. This should be in the context of developing a network of national and international collaborations. As part of the School's research-led teaching ethos, the postholder will be expected to develop innovative learning materials, teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level and supervise PhD students in the areas of biological sciences, tropical marine biology and marine biology. The School puts a high value on collegiality that helps to foster the smooth running of our academic community. Therefore, the postholder should expect to be assigned administrative duties from time to time.

Appointment will be made as Lecturer.

The postholder will have a PhD in a relevant branch of the Life Sciences and a demonstrable track record of research at postdoctoral level in an aspect of Tropical Marine Biology aligned to the Ecology and Environmental Microbiology research group's core themes. Applicants will be required to demonstrate how their experience complements and extends the relevant research in the School and provide evidence of successful collaborative research with colleagues in their home institution or more widely, nationally and/or internationally. The postholder must be an excellent communicator and be able to explain their research to audiences ranging from their peers to the general public. The postholder should have the necessary interpersonal skills that will allow effective interaction with their colleagues, our students and the general public.
